Intel Wants Small Vendors to Embrace Ultrabooks in Big Way
Intel has made a solid investment in ultrabooks and has a lot riding on the success of these MacBook Air-esque mobile PCs. With the idea of ultrabooks being the Santa Clara-based chipmaker’s brainchild, it’s no surprise that it remains undeterred by the initial response to ultrabooks. If anything, the lukewarm response has only made Intel more committed to these ultra-thin and -light laptops. To this end, it's now trying to play matchmaker between ODMs and small PC vendors. According to CNET, the world’s largest chipmaker wants small vendors to jump onto the ultrabook bandwagon in a big way, and so is trying to match them with ODMs (original design manufacturers) like Foxconn, Pegatron, Compal, and Quanta. The site’s source, only identified as someone intimate with Intel’s plans, spilled the beans on a meeting in Taipei between small brands and ODMs that Intel helped arrange as a “matchmaker.” This source named companies like Epson, Onkyo, Viewsonic, Mustek, Motion Computing, WiPro, and Positivo as “prospective ultrabook brands.” Building ultrabooks is not an easy task even for some of the bigger brands out there, let alone small vendors. So this seems to be the right move. But only time will tell whether or not it will pay off. Image Credit: CNET
