You Want IT and Security Partnering Up… Here’s How to Make It Happen

It should come as no surprise that nowadays, a business’ information technology and security precautions are frequently tied closely together—and wisely so. Not only can today’s technology greatly augment the security a business can defend itself with, but advanced security is needed to protect the critical IT that modern businesses rely on to function.

This makes it critical that these two aspects of your business work together, so let’s go over some ways to ensure they can do so optimally.

You Need to Do One Thing Above All: Establish Communications

Solid communication among team members—regardless of their position in the organization—is essential for any department to effectively collaborate with another. This is particularly important between your IT and security team members.

At the end of the day, you need to have the means for your different teams to work together, and considering the topics that IT and security will need to discuss, it only becomes more important that the tools used work well for both parties.

Throughout these communications, your IT and security teams should address a few critically important topics, including:

  • What updates are needed, planned, and actively being implemented
  • What issues are currently creating bottlenecks and roadblocks, and how to address them
  • What feedback has been received concerning your security processes and procedures
  • What suggestions have been made regarding improvements to IT and cybersecurity

This will not only help keep everyone involved on the same page but also create a more transparent and collaborative business overall.

How to Encourage Communication and Collaboration Between Departments

There are a few approaches that will help you to inspire your teams—yes, your IT department and security team members, but also every other department—to work more collaboratively, operating in tandem to achieve more.

Naturally, we often recommend that a business focus on updating its technology and adding collaborative tools to boost the communications it can support. We still recommend this, but there are other means to encourage the kind of collaboration you should want to see amongst your departments.

Leading by example is a good start, so make sure to commit some time to you and your leadership team actively collaborating with your workforce… and, as you do so, inspiring them to share insights and resources that they’ve found helpful by, again, doing so yourself. Reinforce the concept of working as a unit by actively seeking out input and feedback.

Make sure you keep apprised of both individual accomplishments and group efforts.

Critically, when you see the kind of activity that you want to endorse, you need to publicly reward this success and reinforce that these rewards will continue as collaboration does.

Being a green business is certainly not a bad thing. Not only does it help boost your company's environmental friendliness, but it can often attract customers and clients who prioritize the environment. Less mentioned, however, is how being greener can actually give your business an advantage in the right circumstances.
